The Makeup Light (TML) has been designed by US Photographer Michael Astalos after discovering the issues that Makeup Artists were faced with trying to find adequate light sources both on set and on location.
Michaels wife is US Emmy award winning Makeup Artist Vivian Baker and he created TML specifically to meet her needs.
Unlike other makeup lights, TML offers a full light spectrum whereas some other LED lights do not show the full colour range and only go as far as magenta so red is not seen which can be very problematic.
Taking inspiration from the original "key light" on sets that are placed directly above the camera and provide the most flattering lighting and were traditionally always used on leading ladies.
The whole contouring epidemic has been born out of the ring and side style lighting which throws a very flat light onto the face meaning that exaggerated contouring, shading and highlighting is required to add some structure back into the face which can then look very unnatural in everyday conditions.
TML throws the light from around 5 ft away evenly distributing it, filling the space and giving a very real and authentic view so that what you apply will stay true under any other lights.
A very common question is whether onelight is enough? With the extraordinary TML one light is indeed enough, simply be clever with your positioning and ensure that you (the artist) stand slightly off centre to avoid blocking the light source.
